Short answer: Pick Seedream 5.0 Flash for the lower price ($0.025 vs $0.035), exact pixel sizes, larger subjects in frame, and diagrams that need to be logically right: in our water-cycle test, Flash drew evaporation rising from the sea, Lite from the mountain. Pick Seedream 5.0 Lite when you need 4K at the same price as 2K, more than 10 reference images (up to 14), or more literal styling: Lite drew the trumpet as a true silhouette, Flash rendered it in full detail. Both spelled every word right. Both are live on HiAPI: try Seedream 5.0 Flash on its model page.

Same prompt, side by side
Each test ran once per model. Flash at a 2K pixel size, Lite at 2K.
Test 1: a concert poster with exact text
A minimalist concert poster for a jazz night: a single brass trumpet in
silhouette against a deep teal background with soft grain, a warm orange
spotlight circle behind it. Large title at the top reads exactly
“BLUE HOUR JAZZ”, small line at the bottom reads “FRIDAY 9 PM · RIVERSIDE
HALL”. Clean modern typography, generous negative space. No other text.
Seedream 5.0 Flash:

seedream-5.0-flash, 1536×2048, $0.025.
Seedream 5.0 Lite:

seedream-5.0-lite/text-to-image, 3:4, 2K, $0.035.
What's visibly different: both titles and the bottom line are spelled right. Lite took "silhouette" literally, a flat black trumpet with bold white type. Flash rendered a detailed, lit horn standing upright, closer to a product shot than a silhouette.
Test 2: a product shot
Studio product photograph of a pair of white running shoes floating at a
slight angle above a pale sage-green plinth, soft shadow below, a few small
pebbles on the plinth, clean seamless background, crisp mesh and sole
texture, premium e-commerce lighting. No text.
Seedream 5.0 Flash:

seedream-5.0-flash, 2048×1536, $0.025.
Seedream 5.0 Lite:

seedream-5.0-lite/text-to-image, 4:3, 2K, $0.035.
What's visibly different: Flash fills the frame with the shoes, so the mesh and sole texture are easy to see. Lite places small shoes over a centered plinth with lots of empty space, a catalog look that needs cropping for a product page.
Test 3: an educational diagram
A clean flat-illustration infographic of the water cycle on a white
background: ocean, rising evaporation arrows, a cloud, rain over a mountain,
and a river flowing back to the sea. Four labels in clear English placed
next to each stage: “EVAPORATION”, “CONDENSATION”, “PRECIPITATION”,
“COLLECTION”. Soft blue and green palette, educational poster style.
No other text.
Seedream 5.0 Flash:

seedream-5.0-flash, 2048×1536, $0.025.
Seedream 5.0 Lite:

seedream-5.0-lite/text-to-image, 4:3, 2K, $0.035.
What's visibly different: all four labels are spelled correctly on both. Flash draws a complete loop, from sea to cloud to rain to river, with arrows joining each stage. Lite's evaporation arrows rise from the mountain, not the ocean, so the diagram reads wrong to anyone checking the science.
Which to choose
- Lowest price, high volume: Flash, $0.025. 1,000 images cost $25 versus $35 on Lite.
- Exact pixel sizes for a fixed slot: Flash, any size from 921,600 to 4,624,220 pixels.
- Product shots where the subject should fill the frame: Flash in our test.
- Diagrams and infographics: check the logic on either; Flash got it right here.
- 4K: Lite, at the same $0.035 as 2K.
- More than 10 reference images, or edits that must leave untouched areas alone: Lite's editor, up to 14 images.
- Literal style instructions (silhouette, flat graphic): Lite followed them more closely.

FAQ
Is Lite better quality than Flash because it costs more?
Not across the board. In these tests Flash framed the product better and drew the diagram correctly; Lite followed the "silhouette" style more literally and offers 4K.
Which one is faster?
In this run Flash returned in 30–60 seconds and Lite in about 75. Speed varies with load, so time your own prompts.
Do reference images cost extra?
No. Both edit at the same per-image price as generating.
