Short answer: Pick Nano Banana 2 Lite when 1K is enough and you're generating in volume: $0.033 flat, up to 10 reference images, one simple schema. Pick Nano Banana 2 when you need 2K or 4K, PNG or JPG output, or the extra fine detail that showed up in our side-by-side. Same brief, side by side
Both models got the same two briefs, once each. Both at 1K, Lite's only size.
Test 1: product photo with on-image text
Brief: a ceramic coffee mug printed with "Route 42 Coffee Co.", on a wood table, shot as a commercial flat-lay.
Nano Banana 2:

Nano Banana 2 Lite:

What's visibly different: both render the two-line label cleanly. Nano Banana 2 keeps slightly sharper wood grain and a tighter depth of field; Lite is softer in the background. For a thumbnail or a listing image, either works.
Test 2: fine detail and texture
Brief: a close-up portrait of a watchmaker with small gears, a loupe, skin texture and warm directional light.
Nano Banana 2:

Nano Banana 2 Lite:

What's visibly different: this is where the gap shows. Nano Banana 2 resolves the gear teeth and the loupe reflection; Lite goes soft in the same region. For anything a viewer will zoom into, macro product shots, technical illustration, small text, that's what the extra $0.003 at 1K buys, and 2K or 4K widens it further.
Which to choose
- Volume at 1K: Lite, $0.033 flat. Social thumbnails, drafts, A/B variants.
- 2K or 4K output: Nano Banana 2. Lite stops at 1K.
- Fine detail people will zoom into: Nano Banana 2.
- PNG or JPG choice: Nano Banana 2. Lite has no
output_format. - Until November 8: Nano Banana 2 at 1K is $0.018 on sale, below Lite's $0.033. After the sale, Lite is the cheaper 1K again.
- Mixed pipeline: draft on Lite, re-render the winner on Nano Banana 2 at the size you ship.
Switching between them
Both run on POST /v1/tasks, but the schemas differ. Lite rejects resolution and output_format with HTTP 400, and its references go in image_urls instead of image_input.
