A2E.ai Alternative: AI Avatar & Clone Video Generation with heygen-avatar-v

A side-by-side look at identity cloning, input methods, and cost-per-second for teams evaluating A2E.ai against hiapi's heygen-avatar-v.

Teams comparing A2E.ai to other avatar-video tools are usually trying to answer one question: can I get talking-avatar video into my product without gluing together five separate SaaS subscriptions? A2E.ai answers that by wrapping a dozen underlying model vendors — Kling, Wan, Seedream, Flux, Qwen, MiniMax, Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Grok, Hailuo, Veo, and Sora, per its own homepage — behind one credit-based dashboard with custom avatar cloning on top.

This isn't a resale pitch for hiapi's heygen-avatar-v. It's a straight comparison of what each approach actually gets you: identity handling, input methods, real cost per second, and how API access is gated. Where A2E genuinely does more, we say so.

What heygen-avatar-v actually outputs

The clip below is a real render pulled from hiapi's /v1/tasks API, not a mockup:

<video src="https://static.hiapi.ai/blog/a2e-ai-alternative/heygen-avatar-v-demo.mp4" controls poster="https://static.hiapi.ai/blog/a2e-ai-alternative/cover.jpg" style="width:100%;border-radius:8px;"></video>

That's a preset avatar delivering scripted lines with synced lip movement and natural gesture — generated from a single API call with no avatar selection, voice, or background specified. heygen-avatar-v fills in sensible defaults when you don't, which is convenient for quick tests but worth knowing about before you ship: pin every field explicitly in production so output doesn't drift silently between runs.

Identity: preset avatar library vs. A2E's photo/video cloning

This is the biggest structural difference, and it cuts in A2E's favor for one specific use case.

heygen-avatar-v ships with a fixed library of 300+ named, curated avatars — for example "Annie Office Sitting Front," "Gala Business Sofa Front 2," "Bryan Fitness Coach." You pick a preset by name; there's no path to upload your own face and get it animated. For generic talking-head content — explainer videos, product walkthroughs, internal training — that's plenty, and it means zero identity-consent overhead since every avatar is pre-cleared stock talent.

A2E.ai's core product, by contrast, is built around custom identity: its site markets "AI Avatar from Images" and "AI Avatar from Videos" — upload a photo or a short video of a real person (with their consent) and A2E trains a clonable avatar from it. If your product needs a specific founder, presenter, or customer's own likeness speaking generated lines, A2E's cloning path does something heygen-avatar-v structurally cannot.

If you don't need a specific real identity, heygen-avatar-v's curated library covers most talking-avatar use cases without any avatar-training step at all — you're rendering video on the first API call, not waiting on a training job.

Input: script text or your own audio, either way

heygen-avatar-v's input schema takes exactly one of two things: a prompt (a text script the model reads aloud with built-in TTS voices) or an audio_url (your own pre-recorded narration, which the model lip-syncs the avatar to). You can't send both. Output also includes SRT caption artifacts alongside the video file, so captioning isn't a separate post-processing step.

A2E's pipeline is broader here by design — since it fronts ElevenLabs and Cartesia for voice, it supports its own voice cloning (claimed at 50+ languages) and multilingual dubbing (claimed at 40+ languages) as first-class features, not just TTS-from-script. Those language-count and tone-preservation claims are A2E's own marketing copy; we haven't independently verified accuracy across all 40-50 claimed languages, so treat them as a starting point for your own testing rather than a guarantee.

Cost per second, side by side

heygen-avatar-v (hiapi)A2E.ai
Pricing modelFlat per-second, pay-as-you-goMonthly credit subscription
Effective cost/sec$0.15 (every resolution)≈$0.0099/sec on Pro ($14.9/mo), ≈$0.0067/sec on Ultra ($59.9/mo)
Free tierNo (usage-based from the first call)Yes — 30 credits/day, 720p, watermarked, no API access
Minimum spend for API access$0 (pay only for what you render)$14.9/mo minimum (Pro plan or higher)
Custom identityNot availableIncluded (photo or video cloning)

A2E's per-credit math comes from its own published plan pages: Pro gives 60 credits/day plus 1,500/mo upfront (3,300 total/mo) for $14.9, and lip-sync/avatar video is billed at 1 credit per second — which nets out to roughly a penny a second, well under heygen-avatar-v's flat $0.15/sec. That's a real, meaningful price gap if your volume is high and steady.

The catch is the subscription floor. A2E's Free tier explicitly excludes API access — to call A2E programmatically at all, you need to already be paying $14.9-$59.9/month, whether or not you use the full credit allotment that month. heygen-avatar-v has no subscription, no monthly minimum, and no separate signup: if you're already calling other hiapi models, avatar video bills through the same key at the same flat rate, and a single one-off render costs exactly what it costs — no unused credits, no plan tier to pick first.

Which is actually cheaper depends entirely on your volume: A2E wins on cost-per-second at any real scale; heygen-avatar-v wins if your usage is occasional, spiky, or you don't want a subscription commitment just to test the water.

Integration

heygen-avatar-v runs through hiapi's standard async task pattern — POST to /v1/tasks with model: "heygen-avatar-v" and your input, poll until status: "success", then download from the returned output URL before it expires. Full input schema and live examples are on the model page. If you're also evaluating Hedra's custom-portrait workflow against the same base model, see our Hedra comparison — it covers the bring-your-own-portrait tradeoff in more depth.

FAQ

Does A2E.ai have a free plan? Yes — 30 credits/day, 720p output with a watermark, up to 10 custom avatars and 1 voice clone. API access is not included on Free; it requires Pro ($14.9/mo) or Ultra ($59.9/mo).

Can heygen-avatar-v clone a specific person's face? No. It only renders from its built-in library of 300+ preset avatars. If you need a real identity animated from a photo or video, that's a capability A2E offers and heygen-avatar-v doesn't.

Is A2E's per-second price really cheaper? By the numbers on its own pricing page, yes — roughly $0.0067-$0.0099/sec on paid plans versus heygen-avatar-v's flat $0.15/sec. The tradeoff is A2E requires an active monthly subscription to use the API at all, while heygen-avatar-v is pure pay-as-you-go with no minimum.

What models power A2E.ai under the hood? A2E's own homepage credits Kling, Wan, Seedream, Flux, Qwen, MiniMax, Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Grok, Hailuo, Veo, and Sora as underlying vendors — it's an aggregator layer with avatar cloning and lip-sync built on top, not a single proprietary rendering engine.

Does heygen-avatar-v support multiple languages? It accepts a text prompt (read by built-in TTS) or your own audio_url for lip-sync — if you supply narration in another language via audio_url, the model will sync to it. It doesn't include A2E's dedicated dubbing/voice-cloning language catalog.
