PiAPI is a capable multimodal API gateway, and plenty of teams stay on it for good reasons. Its video catalog is deep, it publishes ready-made n8n and Make.com workflows, and it ships both a CLI and an MCP server. People usually go looking for a PiAPI alternative for a narrower reason. A service they relied on was sunset, a per-second video rate adds up at volume, or they want an agent connection they don't have to host themselves.
This guide starts from those reasons. Every PiAPI fact below was checked on piapi.ai on November 4, 2026, and every HiAPI price comes from HiAPI's live pricing API on the same day. Catalogs and prices move quickly, so treat the numbers as a dated snapshot and re-check them before you commit a workload.
What PiAPI does well
It is worth being clear about PiAPI's strengths first, because some of them are reasons not to switch.
- A deep video and creative catalog. PiAPI lists Kling from 1.0 through Kling 4 (including Omni, Motion Control, Avatar and Effects), OmniHuman 1.5, Seedance 2.0 and 2.5, Veo 3 and 3.1, Hailuo, Wan, Hunyuan, SkyReels and more. It also offers 3D generation (Trellis, Meshy, Pixal3D) and music models such as Udio, DiffRhythm and ACE-Step.
- No-code and template workflows. PiAPI publishes n8n and Make.com workflow templates and a set of ready-made generator templates built on its own models.
- CLI and MCP. PiAPI has a CLI, and its docs include a PiAPI MCP server that you clone, build and connect to Claude Desktop or another MCP client.
- Host-your-account mode. Besides pay-as-you-go, PiAPI lets you bind your own accounts for some services and route jobs through them. Few aggregators offer this.
- A unified task schema and an LLM endpoint. Most PiAPI media models go through one create-task and get-task pair with webhooks, and PiAPI also exposes a
/v1/chat/completionsendpoint for LLMs.
If your product depends on 3D generation, Host-your-account, or one of PiAPI's templates, those are real switching costs, and you should weigh them before reading further.
Why developers look for an alternative
From PiAPI's own pages, these are the changes most likely to start a migration:
- Suno is gone. PiAPI's docs announce it is sunsetting its Suno API and point users to a different music API provider. The Suno endpoints in its docs are marked "service stopped."
- Midjourney is gone. PiAPI's Midjourney page states it has discontinued public and pay-per-use access to the Midjourney API and refers users to another site.
- Subscription plus usage. PiAPI's paid plans are $15, $60 and $100 per month (the Free plan is $0 with limited task speed), and API usage is billed separately from your credit balance. If your volume is low or bursty, a pure pay-as-you-go platform may be simpler.
- Per-model rates. On some popular models, PiAPI's published rate is higher than what other gateways charge for the same model. The spot check below shows where.
- Failure accounting you can predict. PiAPI's billing docs describe credits being "frozen" when a job is submitted, and say that if frozen credits pile up you should message staff on Discord to have them cleared. Teams that want failed jobs refunded automatically should look for a platform that documents that explicitly.
The best PiAPI alternatives
1. HiAPI: best for one key across image, video, audio and text with automatic failure refunds
HiAPI puts image, video, audio, music and text models behind one API key. All media generation uses one asynchronous task flow (POST /v1/tasks, then poll or receive a callback). Text models use Chat Completions or Responses, so OpenAI-style clients work by changing the base URL.
What actually differs from PiAPI:
- Failed tasks are never charged. The amount reserved when a task is created is refunded in full once the task reaches the
failstate, as the async task docs document. There are no frozen credits to clear by hand. - A remote MCP server. Connect to
https://mcp.hiapi.ai/mcpwith your API key as a Bearer token. There is nothing to clone or build. It exposes 13 tools that read the live catalog, includinggenerate_image,generate_video,generate_audio,generate_text,get_model_schema,estimate_priceandget_balance. Agent Skills for Claude Code and Codex are also available. PiAPI has MCP too, so the difference here is hosted versus self-run, not whether MCP exists. - English and Chinese documentation. The same docs are published in both languages. PiAPI's docs are in English.
- No subscription tier. You pay per generation from a prepaid balance.
Where HiAPI is not the right pick: it has no 3D generation models, it doesn't offer Suno or Midjourney either, and it has no Host-your-account mode. For music, it carries MiniMax Music, Mureka 9.5 and Lyria instead.
2. KIE.ai: best if Suno is the reason you are leaving
KIE.ai's catalog currently lists a Suno API alongside video, image and chat models. That makes it a natural first stop for teams whose main reason for leaving PiAPI is the Suno shutdown. Its homepage advertises pay-as-you-go credits that never expire, no monthly fee, and no charge for failed generations. Its homepage compares its prices against official list prices. It isn't automatically cheaper than HiAPI, though. On GPT Image 2 at 1K both charge $0.03 per image, and on Nano Banana Pro HiAPI's rate was lower when we checked, so compare per model.
See HiAPI vs KIE.ai for a direct look at where each one wins.
3. WaveSpeed: best for catalog breadth
WaveSpeed describes itself as offering 1,000+ image, video, audio and 3D models, plus 100+ LLMs through a separate OpenAI-compatible LLM API. It has no subscriptions, and it ships an official MCP server, a CLI and plugins for coding agents. If you want the widest possible model shelf, including 3D, it is a strong candidate.
4. fal.ai: best for teams that also want to host their own models
fal.ai offers hundreds of generative media models through one key and client SDK. It also runs a serverless GPU product for deploying your own models or pipelines on the same infrastructure. Its docs say you are not charged for server errors or for time spent waiting in the queue. It fits teams that expect to run fine-tuned or custom models next to hosted ones.
Quick comparison
Every cell below comes from each provider's own site as of November 4, 2026. Where we couldn't verify a dimension for every provider, we left it out of the table.
| Platform | Catalog focus | Text / LLM access | Agent tooling | Billing model | Standout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PiAPI | Video-heavy, plus image, audio, 3D, LLM | /v1/chat/completions | CLI + self-hosted MCP server | Subscription plans + pay-as-you-go credits | Kling full series, OmniHuman, templates, Host-your-account |
| HiAPI | Image, video, audio, music, text | Chat Completions + Responses | Remote MCP + Agent Skills | Pay-as-you-go, failed tasks refunded automatically | One task API for all media, EN + ZH docs |
| KIE.ai | Video, image, music (incl. Suno), chat | Chat models listed | Coding-agent setup guides | Pay-as-you-go, no charge for failed tasks | Suno API, credits never expire |
| WaveSpeed | 1,000+ media models incl. 3D, 100+ LLMs | Separate OpenAI-compatible LLM API | MCP server, CLI, agent plugins | Pay-as-you-go, no subscriptions | Catalog breadth |
| fal.ai | Hundreds of media models | Not compared here | Not compared here | Per output, prepaid credits | Serverless GPU hosting for custom models |
Price spot check: PiAPI vs HiAPI on the same models
These rows are a sample, not a full audit. PiAPI prices are from its model pages, and HiAPI prices are from HiAPI pricing. Both were checked on November 4, 2026.
| Model and setting | PiAPI | HiAPI |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana Pro, 1K/2K image | $0.105 / image | $0.0285 / image |
| Nano Banana Pro, 4K image | $0.18 / image | $0.05 / image |
| Seedance 2.5 text-to-video, 720p | $0.35 / second | $0.204 / second |
| Seedance 2.5 text-to-video, 1080p | $0.80 / second | $0.516 / second |
| Seedance 2.5, 480p | $0.15 / second | Not offered |
| GPT Image 2, 1K | ~$0.032 / image (token-billed, medium quality only) | $0.03 / image |
| Kling 3.0 Omni | $0.10–$0.20 / second | $0.10–$0.1645 / second at 720p–1080p |
The pattern: HiAPI is clearly cheaper on Nano Banana Pro and Seedance 2.5 at 720p and above. GPT Image 2 and Kling 3.0 Omni are close. PiAPI offers a 480p Seedance tier that HiAPI doesn't. For LLMs, PiAPI currently advertises limited-time promotional rates on several GPT models, and its own docs warn those discounts can come with availability issues. Price the specific text models you use on both platforms before you decide.
How to choose
- You left because Suno shut down: start with KIE.ai, which currently lists Suno. If you are open to other music models, HiAPI carries MiniMax Music, Mureka and Lyria under the same task API as its image and video models.
- You need 3D generation: stay on PiAPI or evaluate WaveSpeed. HiAPI doesn't offer 3D models.
- You run Nano Banana Pro or Seedance 2.5 at volume: HiAPI's per-unit rates were lower in our spot check.
- You want failed jobs refunded without opening a ticket: HiAPI and KIE.ai both state that failed tasks are not charged.
- You want an MCP connection with nothing to self-host: HiAPI's remote MCP is a URL plus a Bearer token.
- You plan to deploy your own models: look at fal.ai's serverless offering.
Migrating from PiAPI to HiAPI
The request shapes are close enough that most migrations are a mapping exercise:
- Auth header. PiAPI uses
X-API-Key. HiAPI usesAuthorization: Bearer <key>. - Create task. PiAPI's unified body is
model+task_type+input. HiAPI's ismodel+input, where the model ID already includes the mode (for exampleseedance-2.5/text-to-videoorkling-3.0-omni/image-to-video). Look up the exact ID in the live catalog instead of guessing. - Get result. Poll
GET /v1/tasks/<taskId>untilstatusissuccessorfail, or pass acallbackURL when you create the task. Download outputs promptly, because task output URLs expire. - Retries. Send an
Idempotency-Keyheader when a submission may be retried. Reusing the same key with the same request returns the originaltaskIdrather than creating a duplicate. - Run both in parallel. Use one real prompt, one reference-image job and one intentional failure on both platforms. Compare the output, delivery time and the invoice line before you move traffic.
FAQ
Is HiAPI a good PiAPI alternative?
For image, video, audio and text workloads, yes, especially if you want automatic refunds on failed tasks, a hosted MCP server or Chinese documentation. It is not a substitute if you depend on PiAPI's 3D models, Host-your-account mode or its no-code templates.
Does PiAPI still offer Suno or Midjourney?
No. As of November 2026, PiAPI's docs mark Suno as sunset, and its Midjourney page says pay-per-use Midjourney access is discontinued. Each notice points to a different third-party provider.
Does PiAPI have an MCP server?
Yes. PiAPI documents a TypeScript MCP server that you build and run locally. HiAPI's MCP server is remote, so you connect to a hosted URL instead.
Is PiAPI OpenAI-compatible?
For LLMs, PiAPI exposes a /v1/chat/completions endpoint, and HiAPI does too, so this isn't a deciding factor between them. Media generation uses each platform's own task API.
Which is cheaper, PiAPI or HiAPI?
It depends on the model. In our November 4, 2026 spot check, HiAPI was cheaper on Nano Banana Pro and Seedance 2.5, close on GPT Image 2 and Kling 3.0 Omni, and PiAPI had the only 480p Seedance tier. Check both pricing pages for your exact models.
Bottom line
PiAPI is still a strong choice for deep video coverage, 3D and no-code workflows. If you're leaving because of the Suno shutdown, look at KIE.ai first. If you want one pay-as-you-go key for image, video, audio and text, lower rates on several popular video and image models, and failed tasks that refund themselves, HiAPI is worth a side-by-side test.
