At the HiAPI 1K base prices checked for this comparison, GPT Image 2 costs $0.03 and Nano Banana Pro costs $0.17. What does the extra $0.14 buy you?
We gave both models the same museum-poster and headphone-product prompts. Both got the poster copy right. On the headphones, the more expensive model missed the requested camera angle.
For jobs like these, we would start with GPT Image 2. Nano Banana Pro offers a different composition, but these four first outputs do not give us a clear reason to pay the premium. Here are the originals and complete prompts so you can decide which fits your layout.
The poster question is about layout
The first prompt asked for a square museum poster with the exact headline SCIENCE AFTER HOURS, the exact date FRI 23 OCT, no other words, a luminous ringed blue exoplanet, a brutalist observatory at twilight, and one visitor in a red jacket.

GPT Image 2, first output. The white headline fills the left side and the red date sits beneath it. The ringed planet, observatory, and red-jacketed visitor occupy the right and lower part of the frame. Both requested strings are legible and appear once. This is the more useful starting point when the left side of a landing page or poster carries the information, although the large type needs checking against the final crop.
Nano Banana Pro, first output. The title and date are also legible and appear once. The title is centered above the planet, while the observatory and visitor form a lower scene with generous outer margin. This composition suits a symmetrical poster or a hero image with no left-side call to action. A wide banner crop would need a separate layout check.
Both images do the important first job: they preserve the requested words. The useful choice is where your design needs the visual weight. The price gap does not settle that choice; your placement does.
The headphone result changes the recommendation
The second prompt asked for one original pair of foldable over-ear wireless headphones with matte forest-green earcups, an amber stitched headband, exactly three small copper controls in a straight row on the visible left earcup, and both earcups facing the viewer. It also asked for a pale-gray seamless background, soft studio light, a grounded shadow, and no person, phone, text, logo, or extra object.
The complete prompt used for both models
Create a square premium catalog photograph of one original pair of foldable over-ear wireless headphones, matte forest-green earcups, an amber stitched headband, and exactly three small copper control buttons in a straight row on the visible left earcup. Both earcups face the viewer. Put it on a seamless pale-gray backdrop with soft studio lighting and a grounded shadow. No phone, no person, no text, no logo, no extra objects.
GPT Image 2, first output. The pair is centered against a pale-gray background. Both outer cups face the viewer, and the three copper controls form a straight row on the left cup. The amber stitched headband, soft light, and grounded shadow make it close to a catalog starting image. The file cannot establish real-world foldability or originality, but the visible camera instruction is met.
Nano Banana Pro, first output. The green-and-amber palette remains, and three copper controls are visible on the left cup. The product is shown at a more dimensional angle, but both earcups do not face the viewer: the cups turn inward and one outer shell is not front-on. That is a miss against an explicit product requirement, not simply a different aesthetic. It could work as an angled hero reference, but it is not the requested catalog view.
For a product page that needs a front-facing pair, GPT Image 2 is the closer first pass. For a lifestyle or hero image that welcomes an angle, keep Nano Banana Pro in the test set and judge it against that different brief.
What the $0.14 gap means
On September 18, 2026, HiAPI listed base prices of $0.03 per 1K GPT Image 2 image and $0.17 per 1K Nano Banana Pro image for the selected settings: a difference of $0.14 per image. At 100 one-shot attempts, that arithmetic is $3 versus $17 before promotions, review, editing, or retries. It is a dated HiAPI record, not a general market comparison or a promise about future pricing. For the museum poster, neither first output justifies the premium: both get the copy right, and the better choice depends on your composition. For the headphones, the cheaper GPT Image 2 output is closer to the literal brief. That is the answer to the price question for this sample. It is not a claim that every future prompt will have the same result.
Method and limits
We ran the same two English prompts in HiAPI's Playground on September 17, 2026, with both models set to 1:1 and 1K, without reference images. Each model produced one output per prompt; we did not revise prompts, select variants, or retouch the files. All four saved files are 1024 × 1024. Nano Banana Pro used PNG, while GPT Image 2 used its default background. The comparison covers these two prompts and these four first outputs. It does not measure speed, editing, repeatability, or long-run win rates.

For these two first outputs, there is no clear reason to pay more. Both poster images got the copy right, and GPT Image 2 was closer to the explicit front-facing headphone brief. Use your own layout and product constraints to make the final call.
Which model is better for a product catalog?
GPT Image 2 is the closer starting point when the catalog requires both earcups to face the viewer. Nano Banana Pro may be useful when an angled hero image is part of the brief. Check the exact object view, controls, background, and unwanted elements before publishing.
